Where do you get the figures from?
These figures are from the first release of the 2001 Census data, released in September 2002. They show the population breakdown for the United Kingdom on 29 April 2001 (Census Day).
What is the census?
The Census is a count of all people and households and is the most complete source of information about the population. The latest Census was held on Sunday 29 April 2001.
Who uses the census information?
Central and local Government, health authorities and many other organisations use the census to plan the resources they’re going to need over the next few years and how they should focus their services.
Who carries out the survey?
In England and Wales, the Census is planned and carried out by the Office for National Statistics and in Scotland the General Register Office for Scotland is responsible.

What does the claimant count measure?
The Claimant count measures the number of people who are out of work and claiming benefits (known as Job Seekers Allowance).
Does this include everyone not in full time employment?
No, those on training schemes, are involuntarily part-time (i.e. those who are part-time, but would like to be in full-time work) or are involuntarily temporary workers aren't included. It also doesn't take into account those who’re looking for work, but aren’t eligible for Jobseekers Allowance.
How often do you update the figures?
The figures are updated on a monthly basis and are broken down to postcode sector level (i.e. N8 5).

Where do you get your figures from?
We get our figures from The National Statistics office who publishes a survey of earnings in Great Britain each year (Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) 2007).
How accurate are the figures?
These figures are meant as a general guide to earnings in a particular area, and don't represent exhaustive, definitive data. The information is broken down to local authority level and is based on local population.
