My friend lived in plaistow for a few months and never had any trouble but I'm concerned after reading about the high violence and theft rates (not to mention the rest). I'm a 21 year old female. I've lived in Sheffield for 19 years now. I can only go out at certain times of the day as I'm continually spat at and have racist/sexist comments shouted at me. I also have a dog which has been kicked several times and the locals have threatened to shoot him because he barks when they're abusive. I can't move as they keep the prices of the houses so low here that I can't afford other areas. I grew up in Bedford with Hindu's and Sikh's. There were no problems. When I moved to Sheffield I was truly shocked and appalled at the racism from the Muslim population, especially if you dare to enter their shops. They follow you round looking over your shoulder, ie: you're a thief, and they talk about you loudly in Urdu so that people in the shop stare and have a good laugh at your expense. I'm disabled but have to travel two miles to other shops to avoid this. Racism does not always come from white people and the police are not interested. "It's your word against theirs, Madam". I hope my insurance will cover the vandalism caused to my property recently by neighbours who want me out of THEIR area.

ive lived in sheffield for 40 +yrs and never encountered any racism...and im black...ive seen muslims and whites getting on just fine with each other...sheffield has people from lots of different cultures and yes some people will experience some racism no matter where u live and whatever color u are...please dont make out sheffield is full of racists..its far from it !!

CONCERNED (Harrow), on 07/04/2008 at 16:45

Recently moved to west harrow, the area seemed like a decent area. But recently found out that street hoodies have been paying alot of attention to me. Hanging around and passing around my house. Probably trying to increase the street cred (as is popular nowadays).
This has all come about i believe because as a black guy you have to be associated to one group or another, if your not you become alienated and targetted (as in an american ghetto).
I can handle myself, but with the modern punk mentality of being tough when someones's back is turned. It is a little cornerning.
More police walking around by the park by the West Harrow station would possibly be a good idea.
