Why don’t the average prices reflect my area (England & Wales)?

The tables and graphs give an average of prices for different types of domestic property in England and Wales. (Commercial sales aren’t included.) Please treat this aggregated data with caution.

Isn’t the sales information in Actual property prices confidential?

Actual property prices uses information in the public domain. The service is completely legal and complies with relevant Data Protection policies. It isn’t possible to have information held by the Land Registry removed from their registers.

The distance seems too short. Why?

Distances in FindMyNearest...™ are listed ‘as the crow flies’. So if a business is the other side of a river, for example, the actual distance from your location may well be shorter than the distance you’d have to travel to get there.

Why do you have ads on the site ?

Selling advertising space is one of the main ways UpMyStreet turns a profit - enabling us to run a free-to-use site, and invest in developing new and better services. We appreciate that online advertisements can affect people’s enjoyment, so we only accept advertisers whose product could interest our audience, and we try to increase revenue from other sources, allowing us to strike the right balance in the site’s content.

How can UpMyStreet stay impartial?

We’re completely independent of the companies and public bodies who provide our information, and because we benefit no more from one choice made through the site than another, UpMyStreet.com and our parent company uSwitch, remain impartial.

How do you make your money?

We make money from advertisements that appear on the site, and from enabling business partners to extend our services directly to their customers. Our parent company uSwitch, which operates many of our switching and comparison services, also receives a commission from some suppliers when customers switch to them. (These payments do not affect the ranking of suppliers, and firms that do not pay a commission are also listed. uSwitch and UpMyStreet remain entirely independent of all suppliers - whether they pay a commission or not.)

The map isn’t right. Why?

We use the geographical centre of the postcode or place entered to find the right map. So, if you type in ‘SW1’, you’ll see a map for the postcode at the centre of that area. Double click to enlarge the map and zoom in or out.

If the problem isn’t to do with this way of matching maps to locations, please contact us. We’ll then get in touch with multimap.com who supply our maps.

The circle isn’t in the right place. Why?

The red circle indicates the geographical centre of the postcode or place entered. This could cover between 12 and 16 individual addresses. In rural areas, postcodes can cover up to half a mile across, so the circle may be a few streets away.

If the problem isn’t to do with this way of centring the circle on the map, please contact us. We’ll then get in touch with multimap.com, who supply our maps.

Why isn’t my school listed?

Our information on schools in England is supplied to us by the Department of Education. At present UpMyStreet is unable to list:

  • independent preparatory schools
  • first or special schools

Click here to find out about our listings for Welsh and Scottish schools.

Why doesn’t my Neighbourhood profile reflect my area?

Neighbourhood profiles are a description of the type of neighbourhood to which your postcode has been matched, they’re not a description of the postcode. The overview describes characteristics frequently found in these neighbourhoods. Since most postcodes include a mix of people we don’t expect everyone in a postcode will fit the description perfectly.

The information is provided by the marketing-data firm , CACI. For more information please visit their website at www.caci.co.uk.
