Cost cutting tips

As well as comparing the cost of your current phone calls and switching supplier, here are more ways you can save money on your phone bill.

Call charges

  • Instead of making calls at peak rate send an email or wait for the evening or weekend when the rates are generally cheaper.
  • Never make calls to numbers that are prefixed with "09". These are premium rate numbers that can cost up to £1.50 a minute.
  • Directory Enquires is now a minefield of different numbers all charging different rates. Use FindMyNearest… for local businesses and services contact details.
  • If you make a lot of international calls, consider using a secondary supplier to route these calls through. Compare your current supplier to see the options available.

Suppliers

  • Take advantage of discounts offered by suppliers such as BT’s Friends & Family, which offers a 10% discount to nominated numbers. Keep the numbers updated.
  • Paying by Direct Debit is generally the cheapest way to pay, with some phone suppliers charging extra to pay by other means.
  • Always check the small print. The cheapest per minute rates don't always mean the largest savings. Connection fees, minimum call charges and billing increments all need to be considered.
