Safety tips

Keep your family and home safe when using your gas & electricity supply.

Gas safety tips

  • Always use a Corgi registered engineer when installing or repairing a gas appliance.
  • If you ever smell gas or suspect a leak of Carbon Monoxide call Transco’s free 24-hour national emergency number on 0800 111 999.
  • If you believe you can smell gas: Open doors and windows and if necessary leave the property.
    • Turn off the meter at the valve control.
    • Don’t smoke or use naked flame.
    • Don’t turn electrical switches on and off.
  • Fit a carbon monoxide detector alongside your smoke detector. They could both help save lives.

Electrical safety

  • Always use an NICEIC approved electrical contractor.
  • Never take mains powered appliances into the bathroom. Never touch electrical appliances with wet hands, especially plugs.
  • Don’t overload plug sockets. If you need to have more than one plug per socket use a fused plug board or adaptor.
  • Ensure all leads from electrical appliances are in good condition and not hidden from view under carpets or rugs. If a lead becomes damaged stop using the appliance and replace.
  • Only buy electrical equipment that has the BEAB Approved label (electrical safety mark).
  • When carrying out DIY always check the position of electrical cables and pipes before drilling or fixing nails.
  • Don’t exceed the recommended bulb wattage specified by the manufacturer.
  • Always ensure electrical equipment is properly ventilated. Don’t cover any ventilation holes with a cloth or by placing directly against a wall.
  • Only use appliances outdoors if you’ve connected them to a socket-outlet you know is protected by a residual current device (circuit breaker).
